Rottweilers - Breed Origin

Rottweilers were developed from the dogs that were used by the Roman legions for herding and guarding the cattle. The Rottweiler is considered one of the oldest breeds.

Butchers in southern Germany also developed the breed further. They used the dogs as rovers and sporting dogs for boar hunting. Declining in the 1850s through 1900s, the Rottweiler gained popularity for use as a police dog, working dog, and guard dog in the 20th century.

Rotties, are the second most popular registered breed in the U. S., but, despite that fact, these dogs are mistakenly considered to be dangerous, unstable animals that will attack humans without warning. This could not be further from the truth. However, Rottweilers do not appear on the top-10 list of dogs that have bitten humans in the past year. And the Rotties that have saved lives has outnumbered those that have caused injury.

Rottweilers - Exercise Requirements

The Rottweiler is a working dog. Staying at home unattended is out of the question. With Rottweilers, a spacious yard with a high fence is a requirement. If you cannot provide such conditions for your pet, consider buying another breed. The Rottweiler needs a minimum of two longish walks each day plus regular training sessions. Without proper amount of exercise, Rottweilers tend to gain weight.
